About Hole In The Wall Education Ltd.:

Established in 1999 as a joint venture between NIIT Ltd. And International Finance Corporation, Hole In The Wall Education Ltd. (HiWEL) has been working towards providing an unrestricted and unsupervised learning environment by setting up Computer Learning Stations in typically a playground setting in a rural or urban slum regions. An initiative that was started as a research project has evolved into a successful venture with around 600 Learning Stations in India and other developing countries of Africa and Asia.

Following the “Minimally Invasive Pedagogy”, it has been observed that if children are given an unrestricted and uninhibited access to technology, they possess great capability to learn on their own. This has been proven by achieving improvements in the IT, Behavioral and Academic skills of children.

In an endeavor to bring in more definite and significant changes in the Learning Outcomes of the children, HiWEL is building a “Minimally Invasive Curriculum” or Activity Based Learning solution that caters to the primary school children aged 6-14 years. The solution is intended to complement the setting provided by us and provide an effective learning mechanism that overcomes the current limitations of the Indian Education System. A solution that goes beyond the instructor led system and provides a self paced and a self learning environment for children.

The scale, the socio-economic, cultural diversity and the pedagogy brings in many challenges to the solution. This session shall focus on the challenges and opportunities in terms of an effective instructional design. A design that could break the current limitations of the E-Learning solutions that ignores the need and potential of the 200 million population for whom quality education is still elusive .
